Google has acquired a three-person startup out of the University of Toronto computer science department called DNNresearch, which is focused on voice and image recognition.
DNNresearch was incorporated in 2010 by Professor Geoffrey Hinton and two of his graduate students, Alex Krizhevsky and Ilya Sutskever. The three researchers will be joining Google as part of the acquisition. Financial erms of the deal were not disclosed.
The Web giant reportedly picked up DNNresearch for its research on "deep learning" networks, or the task of explaining context to machines. Their research could advance areas such as speech recognition, computer vision, and language understanding.
